Is your dental implant consultation on the calendar? If so, congratulations – you’re already a big step closer to having a healthy, complete, and even more beautiful smile. Whether your appointment is a few days away or a few weeks away, now is the perfect time to prepare a list of questions so you can confidently decide if this state-of-the-art tooth-replacement solution is ideal for you. If you’re not sure where to start, read on!

1. Am I a Candidate for Dental Implants?

This is arguably one of the most important questions. After all, dental implants are incredibly versatile and lifelike, but they aren’t for everyone. To determine if you’re a candidate, your implant dentist will need to consider several factors, including the density of your jawbone, the state of your oral health, and your willingness to break bad habits, like smoking.

2. Where Will the Procedure Take Place?

While some dentists complete the entire procedure in-house, others work with nearby oral surgeons. If that’s the case, then you will likely need to visit multiple offices throughout the treatment process. It’s better to know that upfront, especially if you’re going to be given two separate bills and the oral surgeon’s practice isn’t close by.

3. Is There Anything I Should Do to Prepare?

Patients are given general instructions leading up to their procedure, like not smoking or drinking alcohol. That said, your dentist may have specific instructions for you, including if you should fast prior to your visit. So, make sure to touch base with your dental team beforehand to ensure you’re set up for success the day of.

4. How Much Time Should I Request Off of Work?

Usually, patients are encouraged to take a day or two off following their procedure. Of course, there are some exceptions. For example, if you have a physically demanding job, then taking three or four days off of work may be more ideal. Similarly, you may need more time to rest if you are getting multiple dental implants.

5. How Can I Reduce the Risk of Implant Failure?

The last thing you want is to invest your valuable time and money in dental implants, only for them to fail a few months later. The best way to prevent that from happening is by talking to your dental team! They can share helpful recommendations, like not chewing on ice, flossing every night before bed, and coming in for a checkup and cleaning every six months.
